Dr. Aleksandra Treglown, THE DEAF PENALTY DIRECTOR
Dr. Treglown earned her undergraduate degrees in Legal Studies and Liberal Studies from the State University of New York and Rutgers University. She earned her master’s degree in Education from Rowan University and her doctorate in Criminal Justice and Criminology from Pennsylvania Western University. Her doctoral dissertation focused on trauma within the criminal justice system and complementary somatic therapies to treat crime-related PTSD. Aleksandra is currently working on another graduate degree in Nonprofit Management from Johns Hopkins University.
As an adult Aleksandra lost a significant amount of hearing due to a virus and is now hard of hearing. Coincidentally, her daughter, born in 2014, was born hard of hearing and attends an ASL focused school. Due to these life experiences, Aleksandra has researched the intersectionality of Deafness and the criminal justice system. Unfortunately, many Deaf/HoH people have unsafe experiences within the criminal justice system due to law enforcement officers not having Deaf awareness. Due to these concerns, Aleksandra created The Deaf Penalty to try to address these issues in New Mexico.
Aleksandra’s first language is English and she is currently still learning ASL. She is responsible for program management and writing/publishing news articles pertaining to Deaf interactions with law enforcement departments. She does not teach ASL content. In her spare time Aleksandra loves yoga, sewing, reading, and DOGS!
